Thach Vien : In Vietnam, some deaths of
the Vietnamese caused by bird flu (avian influenza)
are sounded around the world, but thousands
of Khmer Krom left uncured from the awful disease of blindness for
several years, the government of Vietnam
never took care of them or let the World Health Organisation (WHO) be aware
of it.
Why is the government of Vietnam not curious to scrutinize the origin of this awful disease, happened only to the rural Khmer Krom people? Here are some victims among many thousand others. For this reason, burdened by the suffering of our unfortunate siblings, the Khmer Krom Federation (KKF) makes the below appeal for World Assistance. To get strong support from the World Community, KKF requests our FRIENDS AND COMPATRIOTS to sign up in the petition list at the following address (*).
United we win!
M Preuk : A Vietnamese local newspaper reported
on Friday, January 24, 2003
that in the province of Polleav (Bac Lieu) there has been a strange phenomenon
of epidemy of blindness disease which broke out through many peasant communes
and villages of the Khmer Krom living areas, like the District of Vinh
Chau Township.
About 3,000 Khmer Krom people went blind at either left eye or right eye, or even both eyes. The symptoms were shown as the following: cataract, eye explosion, eye irritation, deformed eyelids, shrinking cornea, damaged lens, etc. In addition there were no sign of these victims have received early treatments or wrong treatments that made the problem worse. According to the report, 98.7% of the blindness were caused by using unclean water in their daily life due to the water pollution and other unknown factors such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers that were permitted by the Vietnamese government. Now these epidemic diseases have been widespreading and breaking out through the province of Kleang (Soc Trang) in the My Tu, My Xuyen districts and the province of Preah Trapeang (Tra Vinh). This blindness disease needs immediate medical attention and a medical team to investigate the root causes of these incidents. (...) [in an Appeal to President George W. Bush, U.N. Overseas Cambodians ask for same political rights as overseas Iraqis
(2005-Jan-14)
Samgnatki : Overseas Iraqis will be
allowed to take part in the first post-Saddam Hussein elections to be held
in Iraq on 30 January 2005 and preparations are being made throughout the
world – in countries where there are significant Iraqi communities – to
provide facilities for Iraqis living abroad to be able to effectively cast
their ballots, which will fully count – as ballots cast in Iraq – for the
determination of the future of Iraq.
After the UN-organized elections in 1993 when they were allowed to cast
their ballots in their countries of residence, overseas Cambodians (about
300,000 potential voters at the present time) have never been allowed
to take part in any elections held in Cambodia ever since. They rightly
consider that democracy has moved backward over the last twelve years in
their native country.
